4-1 CANCELLING CASES. The lender must notify the appropriate HOC via FHA Connection, or its functional equivalent, to close outstanding files and cancel the FHA case number if the origination and closing of a loan will not be completed or if FHA mortgage insurance endorsement will not be sought.
The lender must notify the FHA Homeownership Center with jurisdiction in that area. Lenders cannot cancel a case number for a loan that has already closed or for a loan the finance company does not own or hold. Lenders also cannot cancel FHA case numbers via the online system known as FHA Connection.
Any non-endorsed case for which there is no activity for six months since the last action is automatically canceled. However, if upfront mortgage insurance premium was received by HUD, the case is automatically canceled after 18 months of inactivity.
In order to request a case number cancellation, contact the FHA Homeownership Center with jurisdiction over the area to initiate the process. This can be done by e-mail and must include the lender name, email address, telephone and contact information; and case number.
Mortgages are assigned using a document called an assignment of mortgage. This legally transfers the original lenders interest in the loan to the new company. After doing this, the original lender will no longer receive the payments of principal and interest.
The Case Number Assignment Update page may appear with a warning message. A warning message is displayed indicating the status of the validation of the name, Social Security Number, and birth date combination of the borrower(s) against government records.
If a case number has been canceled, and FHA insurance will be sought, the lender must fax a request to the appropriate HOC, requesting that the case number be reinstated to an active status.
