Infection of the knee joint following ACL reconstruction is a rare but serious complication. Past studies have attempted to uncover the risk factors that make certain individuals more susceptible to infection than others. But many of these studies have been limited to small and medium-sized cohorts. A new study reported in the American Journal of Sports Medicine has examined the largest, single-center cohort to date. Findings reveal that graft type, age, and revision surgery could be linked to the risk of infection following ACL reconstruction. The researchers behind the study reviewed more than 11,000 total procedures performed at a single institution between 2010 and 2018. Among these, 48 infections were identified. In addition to infections, the researchers reviewed patient and procedure characteristics associated with infection, infection characteristics, incidence of ACL graft retention and factors associated with retention versus removal of ACL grafts. A: Older age can make a difference in outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair or reconstruction. Graft rupture, increased stiffness, and decreased activity level are reported more often in older groups.
Two important points have been revealed by the present study. First, outcomes were poor in patients less than 20 years of age. This is an age at which the healing ability of ligaments is generally considered high. However, patients 20 or more years of age had better outcomes in the present study.
Dr. Blackwell supports patients of all ages, from teenage athletes to patients in their 40s, 50s, and above.
Our findings indicate that the human ACL has a high intrinsic healing capacity. In younger patients, however, ACL injuries were more severe and the progress of morphological recovery was poorer than in adult patients.
Now 20 or more years later, more than half (57 per cent) rate their results as excellent. Another 27 per cent say they have good results. Only 16 per cent said that they felt their outcomes were poor to fair. Patients who had damage to the articular cartilage or meniscus were more likely to have less knee function.
Positive surgery outcomes in those over 40 include: Improvements to knee stability. Reduced osteoarthritis risk evaluated one, two and five years after surgery. Results as good, if not better, than those who were younger (under 40 years of age), when combined with dedicated physical therapy as follow-up.
ACL reconstruction in patients older than 50 years is a safe procedure with good results that are comparable to those of younger patients.
The AGE( ) function calculates the number of days between two dates.
