The main difference between PAP and CHAP is that PAP uses a Two-Way Handshake and sends the password in clear-text form, whereas CHAP uses a Three-Way Handshake and never sends the password between the parties. As a result, CHAP is much more secure than PAP.
VPN authentication is the verification of a user or a device that is attempting to establish a connection to a virtual private network (VPN). VPN authentication ensures that only those authorized can access the network. See also: authentication server, biometric authentication, two-factor authentication.
Setting Up PAP Authentication (Task Maps) Gather preconfiguration information. Collect user names and other data that is needed for authentication. Update the password database, if necessary. Ensure that all potential callers are in the servers password database. Create the PAP database. Modify the PPP configuration files.
American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) sends the user name and password in clear text. Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) sends clear text between the user and the server. PAP is the default authentication type.
Authentication is the process of identifying users that request access to a system, network, or device. Access control often determines user identity ing to credentials like username and password.
PPP authentication includes the following categories: PAPTwo-way handshake authentication. The password is in plain text or cipher text. CHAPThree-way handshake authentication. The password is in plain text or cipher text. MS-CHAPThree-way handshake authentication. MS-CHAP-V2Three-way handshake authentication.
The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP. PAP validates users by password. PAP does not encrypt passwords for transmission and is thus considered insecure.) is an authentication protocol in which the user name and password are sent to the remote access server in unencrypted form.
CHAP is a stronger authentication method than PAP, because the secret is not transmitted over the link, and because it provides protection against repeated attacks during the life of the link. As a result, if both PAP and CHAP authentication are enabled, CHAP authentication is always performed first.
