Generally, a Pap test follows this process: You will be asked to undress from the waist down and put on or cover up with a hospital gown. You will lie on an exam table, with your feet in stirrups. Your healthcare provider will insert an instrument called a speculum into your vagina.
When performing a Pap smear, your physician will insert an instrument called a speculum into your vagina to dilate your cervix the opening of your uterus. She will then swab the cervix, collecting a sample of cells. These are sent to a lab for analysis. A Pap smear only takes a few minutes and is generally pain-free.
THE SPECULUM EXAM SHOULDNT HURT! Its a common misconception that the speculum exam is supposed to hurt. Gynecologists are expertly trained to place a speculum, with as little discomfort as possible. Now Im not saying you should ENJOY this part of the exam, but it really shouldnt HURT.
What about using a numbing agent? If youve had an IUD inserted, your provider probably used a numbing agent to help reduce pain in your vagina and cervix. Unfortunately, it isnt possible to do the same before a Pap smear. The presence of a numbing agent can obscure your results.
Your doctor inserts an instrument called a speculum into your vagina, as during a Pap test, to see your cervix. Your doctor inserts a series of increasingly thick rods into your cervix to slowly dilate it until its open enough.
How wide does a speculum open you? While many people imagine their vaginal walls getting stretched drastically, usually, the widening is only slight. For instance, it will only need to be widened an inch or less for a routine Pap smear.
Health care providers use speculums to look inside the vagina and see the cervix. It is an important tool to check for abnormal growths, take samples (such as for a Pap smear) and perform surgery. Speculums come in different sizes, styles and colors.
Pap test. During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2). The cells are placed in a bottle that contains a solution to preserve them (3).
