M.D., which can be used with or without the periods (M.D. or MD) is the designation for a medical doctor.
(i.e. Apartment can be abbreviated to APT, Building to BLDG, Suite to STE, Highway to HWY). Avoid the use of periods after the abbreviated words and capitalize the abbreviations.
Period after a single word Sometimes a single word can form the sentence. In this case you place a fullstop after the word as you would in any other sentence. This is often the case when the subject is understood as in a greeting or a command.
*Note that other units of measurement, such as 18 km, 20 ft, and 5 m, do not require periods after the abbreviated unit unless they fall at the end of a sentence.
Put commas between the name and credentials, as well as between credentials (Kelly Smith, MD, PhD). Credentials should be listed in the following order: Highest academic degree earned, licensure, certification (John Smith, DNS, RN, FNP-BC). Do not put Dr. before a name unless quoting someone.
Use periods for abbreviations that end in lowercase letters (a.m. or Mrs. or etc.) but use no periods for abbreviations that include one or more capital letters (MBA or PhD).
See Using Our Brand Name in the Brand Center for brand name abbreviations. Do not use periods in academic abbreviations: MD, PhD. Use the degree abbreviation after the name instead of the courtesy title Dr. before the name: Stanley A. Levin, MD, not Dr.
