Jesus responded to the rebuke of Peter with this pointed teaching on the cost of following Him. Just as Jesus was facing a cross, every Christian must be willing to lay his or her life down for Jesus Christ. Professing to be a Christian defines you.
As slaves depend on their masters to provide everything that is needed, those devoted to money or to God also depend on their respective masters to provide for them. The demands of those two masters will always compete. So, Jesus concludes, a person cannot serve both God and money.
Context Summary Christ warns that those who follow Him must be willing to give up all else in the world, and to take on hardship and persecution, as needed. He adds that some standing there will not die before seeing Him coming in His kingdom; this prediction is fulfilled in the next passage (Matthew 17:12).
A call to bear ones cross as part of following Jesus, then, is a call to be as submitted to Christ as the condemned criminal was to his death. Therefore, when Jesus calls for self-denial and cross-bearing, hes claiming authority. Following Christ means disowning the self and giving allegiance to him instead.
In Luke 9:23, Jesus says, Carry your cross. A cross was an instrument of death. It was the beginning of the death march to the execution site. There is an element in the Christian life where we are to carry our cross daily, meaning that we are to die to self daily. That is evidence of true saving faith.
To take up their cross, Jesus was asking His followers whether they were willing to follow Him to their death. To die to self. To sacrifice their own personal ambitions, dreams, and expectations. Jesus asked His disciples whether they would take up their cross of self-denial and self-surrender.
Luke is showing that following Jesus is a serious commitment. We cant look back at the past; we need to keep our eyes on our work and where it will take us in the future.
Grace alone means that God loves, forgives, and saves us not because of who we are or what we do, but because of the work of Christ. Our best efforts can never be good enough to earn salvation, but God declares us righteous for Christs sake. We receive that grace through faith alone.
