zip now supports two distinct types of command modes, external and internal. The external modes (add, update, and freshen) read files from the file system (as well as from an existing archive) while the internal modes (delete and copy) operate exclusively on entries in an existing archive.
The zip command provides the option to append additional entries to an existing archive using the -g flag. If the specified archive file doesnt already exist, the zip command will create it. We can see that the zip command prints a warning, telling us the archive total-new-archive.

Disabling the zip Output If you rather have no output from the command, you can use the -q or --quiet option to silence any output.
The zip command allows you to specify a compression level using a number prefixed with a dash from 0 to 9. The default compression level is -6 . When using -0 , all files will be stored without compression. -9 will force the zip command to use an optimal compression for all files.
To create a ZIP file in Linux through the GUI, do the following: Open Files and navigate to the appropriate directory. Select the files for archiving, right-click the files, and choose Compress. Enter the archive name and choose the .zip format from the dropdown menu. Click Create to create the ZIP file.
By default, the zip command uses a compression value of 6 taken from a range of 0-9 with 0 being uncompressed and 9 being the maximum allowable level of compression.
Wondering what is the -j option mean in the zip command. I found the explanation as following: -j Store just the name of a saved file (junk the path), and do not store directory names. By default, zip will store the full path (relative to the current path).
