For strong acids (HF and Sulfuric), use approximately an 8:1 ratio of neutralizer to chemical to completely neutralize the spill. o The acid neutralizer will turn from purple to yellow to red when finished. o Check pH, it should be around 7. If still acidic, continue adding neutralizer until pH=7.
Neutralize acids with soda ash or sodium bicarbonate. Bases can be neutralized with citric acid or ascorbic acid.
1. Cool the burn under cold running water for at least 20 minutes. This will help to cool the burn and wash out the chemical. If you dont have access to water, you can use other harmless liquids (ones that you could drink such as milk or cola).
Neutralize acids with soda ash or sodium bicarbonate. Bases can be neutralized with citric acid or ascorbic acid. Use pH paper to determine when acid or base spills have been neutralized.
Clean up the spill by spreading appropriate absorbent material for the chemical spilled (i.e., absorbent clay for oil and most aqueous and organic liquid spills, calcium carbonate for acid spills, citric acid for base spills, and Hg Absorb Powder [found in the Mercury kit] for mercury spills).
To clean sulfuric acid, use a solution of one pound of baking soda per gallon of water. Apply with a cloth or sponge, and avoid splashing or spreading the acid. Use mild acids, such as lemon juice or vinegar, for alkaline batteries, and dab the spill area with a cloth.
Remove/turn off all sources of ignition in the spill area. Locate spill kit. Use absorbent pads from spill kit to absorb spill. For benzene spills 1L or beyond lab staff capabilities: evacuate lab and call UNM PD (277-2241) and SRS (277-2753).
Acids: for small spills sprinkle saturated bicarbonate solution (found on chemistry teaching lab benchtops) directly on the suspected acid spill until no more bubbling occurs, then clean up with a sponge and water.
