Emotional attachment is the sense of connection and affection you may feel for people you are close to. It is a basic human need. 1 Attachment styles are a pretty buzzy concept right now when it comes to relationships, and youve probably considered whether you have an anxious, avoidant, or secure attachment style.
Allowing yourself to be vulnerable is key to fixing avoidant attachment. Begin by sharing small personal details with trusted friends or partners, gradually increasing the depth of your disclosures. Embracing vulnerability helps build intimacy and trust in relationships, counteracting the instinct to withdraw.
Open your mind. We often cling to things, situations, or people because were comfortable with them. We know how theyll make us feel, whether its happy or safe. Consider that new things, situations, and people may affect you the same. The only way to find out is to let go of whats come and gone.
When you are in love with someone, you feel free. You can finally be yourself around the person who knows you inside and out. But when you are attached to someone, you will notice that your feelings control your entire mind and body; in turn, you may even manipulate people to be with you.
We tend to think of attachment as positive, based on love, caring, compassion, trust, support. Indeed, most start out that way. But the stronger attachments tend to be negative those that have gradually devolved into chronic resentment, anger, blame, and criticism, driven by fear of abandonment.
This bond can be with another person such as a relationship, a particular place such as a childhood home, a date such as an anniversary, or an object such as a blanket. The emotions you receive from emotional attachment are a sense of safety, protection, sense of belonging, comfort, reliability, and positivity.
Here are some things you can try. Identify the reason. Ask yourself why youre now deciding to detach from the relationship. Release your emotions. Dont react, respond. Start small. Keep a journal. Meditate. Be patient with yourself. Look forward.
In an unhealthy attachment, one person typically looks to another for emotional support, usually without offering much in return. The partner who consistently provides support without getting what they need may feel drained, resentful, and unsupported.
