Syntax: How to Match a String to a Regular Expression Is the character string to match. For example, the regular expression ^Ste(v|ph)en$ matches values starting with Ste followed by either ph or v, and ending with en. Note: The output value is numeric.
Regular expressions and filenames specifies an actual dot in the filename. An asterisk (*) is the same as (matches 0 or more characters). A question mark (?) is the same as a regular expression dot (.); that is, a question mark matches exactly one character. A caret (^) has no meaning.
The usual context of wildcard characters is in globbing similar names in a list of files, whereas regexes are usually employed in applications that pattern-match text strings in general. For example, the regex ^[ \t]+|[ \t]+$ matches excess whitespace at the beginning or end of a line.
The \b metacharacter matches at the beginning or end of a word.
Inside a character range, \b represents the backspace character, for compatibility with Pythons string literals. Matches the empty string, but only when it is not at the beginning or end of a word.
\B is a zero-width non-word boundary. Specifically: Matches at the position between two word characters (i.e the position between \w\w) as well as at the position between two non-word characters (i.e. \W\W). Example: \B.\B matches b in abc. See regular-expressions.info for more great regex info.
Word Boundary: \b The word boundary \b matches positions where one side is a word character (usually a letter, digit or underscorebut see below for variations across engines) and the other side is not a word character (for instance, it may be the beginning of the string or a space character).
In Java, \b is a back-space character (char 0x08 ), which when used in a regex will match a back-space literal.
In regex, the uppercase metacharacter denotes the inverse of the lowercase counterpart, for example, \w for word character and \W for non-word character; \d for digit and \D or non-digit.
The caret ^ and dollar $ characters have special meaning in a regexp. They are called anchors. The caret ^ matches at the beginning of the text, and the dollar $ at the end.
