Structure of Social Security Numbers information contributed by Jerry Crow (crow@anasaz.com) and Barbara Bennett A Social Security Number (SSN) consists of nine digits, commonly written as three fields separated by hyphens: AAA-GG-SSSS. The first three-digit field is called the area number.
The Social Security number is a nine-digit number in the format AAA-GG-SSSS. The number has three parts: the first three digits, called the area number because they were formerly assigned by geographical region; the middle two digits, the group number; and the last four digits, the serial number.
Never type your SSN into an email or instant message and send it. The majority of such messages can be intercepted and read. Also, dont leave a voicemail that includes your SSN. If you need to contact someone and give them your number, its best to do it in person.
You can ask almost anything in your form! However, due to FERPA, information security, and personal privacy, you should never ask for grades, passwords, and personally identifiable information (PII) like Social Security numbers.
The SSN is a 10-digit number, issued by the Social Security Administration, a U.S. government agency, that is used to track tax payments and issuance of benefits for U.S. citizens, permanent residents (Green Card holders), and other resident and non-resident aliens with work authorization.
You can lock your Social Security numbersometimes referred to as freezing your SSNin a couple of ways. The easiest way to lock your SSN is by calling the Social Security Administration to block electronic access. Or, you can apply a Self Lock on E-Verify to stop anyone from using your SSN to apply for a job.
Beginning 04/07, the date the card is issued is printed under the signature line. Beginning 09/08/07, the number holders name is always printed on two lines, with the last name printed directly below the first and middle names.
