Paragraph. para. For electronic sources that do not provide page numbers, use the paragraph number and, if available, preceded by the abbreviation para.
APA Style (7th ed.) Begin every line of text from the left margin, except for the first line of each paragraph. Indent each line of a new paragraph one tab space, which should be set at 1.27 cm or 0.5 in (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. 45).
General Guidelines Make 1 inch margins on the top, bottom, and sides. The first word in every paragraph should be indented one half inch. APA recommends using a font that is accessible to all readers. Double space the entire research paper, including the title page. Left align the text.
APA in-text citation style uses the authors last name and the year of publication, for example: (Field, 2005). For direct quotations, include the page number as well, for example: (Field, 2005, p. 14).
Each body paragraph usually begins with a topic sentence, gives examples or proof of what you state in the topic sentence, then ends with a concluding sentence. If you are quoting the exact words of another author, make sure that you introduce the quote and use quotation marks around the authors words.
You may quote a word, phrase, sentence, or entire passage. There are three main rules for quoting in APA Style: If the quote is under 40 words, place it in double quotation marks. If the quote is 40 words or more, format it as a block quote.
If the quotation has more than 40 words, use a block quotation. Begin the quotation on a new line and indent a half-inch from the left margin. Double-space the entire quotation, and at the end of the quotation, provide citation information after the final punctuation mark.
Incorporate the quote into the text and enclose it within double quotation marks. Include the author, year of publication, and page number for the reference. If the author and date are introduced in the sentence as a narrative citation, then add the page number in parentheses at the end of the quote.
