In 1867, New Brunswick decided to join with Nova Scotia and the Province of Canada (now Quebec and Ontario) to form Canada. After Confederation, shipbuilding and lumbering declined, and protectionism disrupted trade with New England.
Housing. Owing to the low population of New Brunswick, most inhabitants opt to reside in the three larger cities of the province. These cities are renowned for their cost-effective rent and purchase prices, establishing New Brunswick as one of the most budget-friendly real estate markets across Canada.
Annexation was never a very popular choice. Many Canadians were loyal to the Crown and Great Britain, especially the descendants of the United Empire Loyalists. French Canadians worried about being an even smaller minority in a larger union, and were concerned about American anti-Catholicism.
The motto, Spem reduxit means Hope Restored, refers to the provinces having acted as a haven for Loyalist refugees who fled there after the American Revolution.
New Brunswick was one of the first provinces, along with Ontario, Qubec and Nova Scotia, to join together to form the Dominion of Canada in 1867. As part of Canada, New Brunswick has experienced immigration on a smaller scale from all over the world, and today boasts a varied and increasingly multicultural population.
About two thirds of the population are English speaking and one third is French speaking. New Brunswick is home to most of the cultural region of Acadia and most Acadians. New Brunswicks variety of French is called Acadian French and 7 regional accents can be found.
After the American Revolution, some 14,000 loyalists from the U.S. settled there. As a result of this large influx, it was separated from Nova Scotia, and the province of New Brunswick was established in 1784. In 1867 it became an original member of the Dominion of Canada.
Canada is separate from the United States for historical reasons, which can be linked to the American Revolution and the Treaty of Paris that followed in 1783. The outcome of the War of 1812 permanently sealed the separation between Canada and the United States.
