You may download and print an application form for your Mtis Nation of Alberta citizenship. Once completed, the application can be mailed, emailed, or delivered in-person to either the regional offices or the Provincial Office in Edmonton.
To prove Mtis ancestry, the Registry needs to document the generation-to-generation connections that link the applicant to a historic Mtis ancestor who lived in the Mtis Homeland sometime during the 19th century (1800-1901) and was recognized in primary historical documents as Mtis.
Mostly, however, they were excluded because they were Indians. With some exceptions, until 1960, First Nations peoples had to give up their Indian status through enfranchisement to gain the right to vote in federal elections. Enfranchisement gave citizenship rights but stripped the person of their Indian status.
Registration is divided into two main categories, which are known as sections 6(1) and 6(2). This being said, people who are registered under sections 6(1) or 6(2) have ex- actly the same access to services and benefits. However, their ability to pass Indian status to their children is not the same.
Processing time for a complex case can take up to 2 years. If youve also applied for a secure status card, you should receive it 8 to 12 weeks after receiving the letter of confirmation.
After two consecutive generations of parents who do not have Indian status (non-Indians), the third generation is no longer entitled to registration.
Membership requirements have Canadian Indigenous ancestry. identify with Mtis history and culture. be 18 years old. have been a member of a Metis Settlement or have lived in Alberta for the past 5 years. have or will have suitable living accommodation in the Settlement area.
The BC Mtis Federation (BCMF) will recognize Full Membership upon proof of genealogy, going back five generations or 100 years.
