Hello, everyone, and welcome back to my channel, Sparkle English, where I teach you how to improve your level of English. My name is Jennifer, and I will be your teacher today. So in todays lesson, Im going to teach you about periods, punctuation, and how to use spaces. This is a very common error I see all over my channel. People dont know when to use spaces, or how many spaces to use after they put periods, exclamation marks, quotation marks, etc. So lets start the lesson. So how many spaces do we use after a period? Well, in the past, with a typewriter, we would use two spaces. And thats because when you use a typewriter, the typewriter allows the exact same amount of space for each letter, whereas some letters are bigger than other letters. A period ( . ) is a form of punctuation used to end a declarative sentence. Periods are frequently, but not always used, after initials and with two-letter abbreviations (U.S.).
For example, Declarative sentence: Grass is green. (ends in a period) Question: Is grass green? (does not end in a period) Exclamation: This grass is blue!
In American English, period is the term for the punctuation mark used to end declarative sentences. In British English, the mark is usually called a full stop. Neither term is right or wrong. Theyre just different ways of saying the same thing.
No. A sentence should never have two periods at the end. If a sentence ends with an abbreviation followed by a period, do not add an additional period: She explained the rules for periods, commas, semicolons, etc.
Put commas and periods within quotation marks, except when a parenthetical reference follows.
The period is used to end all sentences except those that are direct questions or exclamations. Periods are also used in abbreviations.
The word period was used as a name for what printers often called the full point, the punctuation mark that was a dot on the baseline and used in several situations. The phrase full stop was only used to refer to the punctuation mark when it was used to terminate a sentence.
