The U.S. Patent Office (USPTO) assigns these numbers as they choose. Not every patent application is published, some inventors may choose to not have their application published. This is an option during the original filing of the application.
A Patent Number is assigned by the USPTO. A patent number may include up to eight characters and is formatted as follows: Utility : Patent numbers consist of six, seven or eight digits. Enter the Patent number excluding commas and spaces and omit leading zeroes.
On the patent publication date, the patent becomes publicly available and no longer confidential. This means that anyone who searches for the patent can read its specifications and claims and can keep up with the status of the patent to see when it is officially granted by the State.
An Application Number is a unique identifier for the application which includes a two digit series code followed by a six digit serial number which is assigned by the USPTO.
Application number: the number assigned to the patent application when it is filed; Publication number: the number assigned when the patent application is published at 18 months after filing; and. Patent number: the number assigned when the application becomes a patent.
Once a patent application is filed, the U.S. PTO will make it available to the public, even if a patent has not yet been issued. In addition, any patents that have already been issued are always available to the public. However, unlike a patent application, provisional patent applications are almost never published.
All sheets of drawings must be numbered in the center of either the top or the bottom of each sheet but not in the margin in numbers larger than those used as reference signs in order to avoid confusion with the latter.
Patent applications filed with the USPTO are given a serial or application number in the format of XX/YYY,YYY. The first two digits before the slash (the XX) are the series code and the six digits after the slash (the YYY,YYY) are the serial or application number.
