okay so one of my favorite things that patients always say is is the pap smear going to hurt me listen if i was a woman i wouldnt want to be getting a pap smear why because its not the most comfortable thing but you want to be with a provider thats going to take you through it step by step so heres the speculum this is what we use to look inside the vagina when were looking and were doing your pap smear were looking at your cervix so this is the side view of your uterus your cervix your vagina and what we want to do is place a speculum on the inside to look at the uterus and the cervix from here what we do is that we take the brush we go inside we take a little swab sample there we take the spatula which is another one to get more cells and then what we do is we put it in the solution and send it off to pathology to get a screening of what that area looks like and what it looks for is that area we talked about before that transition area where the virus might be sitting or there

The most common reason for unsatisfactory pap smears was due to a paucity of epithelial elements (66.6%), followed by obscuration of smear details by blood/inflammatory cells/mucus (9.9%) and air drying artifacts (4.4%). There were multiple reasons in 19.1% of cases with unsatisfactory pap smears.
An inadequate cervical smear test result simply means that the swab sample did not contain enough cells to provide an accurate result. Youll need to repeat the smear test, usually in three months time, to give the surface of your cervix enough time to regenerate enough cells.
The most common reasons included insufficient endocervical epithelial cells, excessive smear thickness, cells obscured with numerous inflammatory elements and erythrocytes, and sample inadequacy due to the presence of foreign material, poor fixation or staining.
An unsatisfactory cytology result is reported when there are insufficient cells for the cytopathologist to properly evaluate the specimen. This occurs in approximately 2% of cytologic samples.
You may feel a little lightheaded and if you have had a biopsy, you may have some mild bleeding. Talk to Dr Cook about how to take care of yourself after the procedure and when you need to return for a check-up.
Unclear (ASC-US) It is common for test results to come back unclear. Your doctor may use other words to describe this result, like equivocal, inconclusive, or ASC-US. These all mean the same thingthat your cervical cells look like they could be abnormal. It is not clear if its related to HPV.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
