Keep image sizes large enough to show details, but small enough to avoid taking up the entire screen; for most pictures, a size between 500 and 800 pixels wide is sufficient. Size down digital camera pictures, which often use a higher resolution than regular web images.
I repeat: Web images are measured in pixel dimensions also referred to as PX so 600px X 450px means 600 pixels wide by 450 pixels high (typically, width is quoted first). Web images are also measured in file size (i.e. 200K or 2MB !).
