If citations are consistently placed in notes, then a repeated citation would require a new note. Note numbers are not reused in an essay in MLA style; instead, notes are numbered consecutively, as recommended by The Chicago Manual of Style (Sequencing of Note Numbers).
On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Format, on the Number format pop-up menu, click the option that you want, and then click Apply.
Click anywhere inside any footnote in the document. Press Ctrl+A to select all footnotes, but only footnotes (Figure B). Press F9 to update any fields in all the selected footnotes and click Yes to see the updated fields, as shown in Figure C.
