Youve got to love the internet for providing vast reserves of useful information. But that also comes with the cost of even larger reserves of misleading information from unqualified keyboard warriors. How to write a letter of recommendation for medical school Determine how well you know the student. Create a letterhead. Explain how you know the student. Outline the students abilities. Compare the student to others. List some accomplishments and results of prior work. Review your letter.
I am writing this letter to strongly recommend Dr. [Name] for your fellowship program. As their [mentor, attending, supervisor, etc] at [organization] over the past [X] years, I have seen firsthand Dr. [Names] exceptional abilities and passion in the field of [specialty].
While theres nothing totally wrong with getting a letter from your own physician, I think it helps if youve shadowed them or have some sort of relationship outside of doctor-patient that they can comment on.
Most medical schools require that letters of evaluation be submitted on letterhead and bear the authors signature.
Your medical school recommendation letter should be exceptional. Dont ask for a letter from someone who doesnt describe you as an excellent candidate for medical school. Your referral should be able to talk about your best skills, your most outstanding achievements, and your virtuous character.
Bottom line: While letters of intent are not legally binding, you should in no way be tempted to do anything dishonest or unethical.
Applicants should submit at least 3 letters, but not more than 6. We strongly recommend at least one letter from someone who has taught you in a science class, even if you are a non-traditional applicant.
