Traditionally, a monogram reads First Name Initial, Last Name Initial, Middle Name or Maiden Name Initial. With the Last Name Initial being the larger Middle Initial. For example, if you had the name Kelsie Elizabeth Vogds, her monogram would read KVE.
Most other abbreviated titles, however, require a full stop, as shown above. A persons initials are a kind of abbreviation, and these are usually followed by full stops: John D. Rockefeller, C.
Any initials coming from a name (such as The W. A. Franke College of Business or J. L. Walkup) should have periods and a space between the two initials, just as the two names would have a space. All other acronyms should not have periods or spaces.
Its not a huge surprise that first and last names starting with Q, X, Y and Z are hard to come by, which means that having a first and last name starting with those letters is extremely unlikely. So if your initials are QZ, XY or ZX, take a moment to appreciate your own uniqueness.
Do use periods after abbreviations and acronyms that are forms of address, initials within proper names, earned degrees, and when expressing measures of time (Dr. Bauer; M.S. degree; Steven S. Wilson, Jr.; 5:00 p.m.; 10 B.C.).
Periods are frequently, but not always used, after initials and with two-letter abbreviations (U.S.). Declarative sentence: Harry S Truman did not use a period after his middle initial. Periods should be placed inside closing quotation marks, except when followed by a parenthetical note.
You should always put periods if its not clear that its initials or an acronym. You might want to put them in anyway but as long as there is no confusion you can remove it.
