MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) is a technology invented in the 1950s thats used to verify the legitimacy or originality of checks and other paper documents. Special ink, which is sensitive to magnetic fields, is used to print certain characters on the original documents.
If youre printing checks on blank check stock, you certainly need a MICR printer and the security features that are exclusive to high-quality, OEM MICR toner. While its possible to print checks using a standard laser printer, without the proper fonts and features, you can run into all sorts of problems.
Data in the code line on checks not printed in MICR ink cannot be read by check readers with only standard magnetic read capability. The check will be rejected and will require manual data entry. The inventory of check readers today is a mixture of magnetic, optical, or both technologies.
The magnetic ink character recognition line enables a computer to rapidly read and record numbers or other information from printed documents, such as a personal check. In this case, that information is a check number, routing number, and account number.
