This is a rare autosomal recessive disorder and 20% of CIPA patients do not survive past 3 years of age. Insensitivity to pain usually makes it harder to locate source of infection and leads to delayed diagnosis and treatment.
CIPA is extremely dangerous, and in most cases the patient doesnt live over age of 25. Although some of them can live a fairly normal life, they must constantly check for cuts, bruises, self-mutilations, and other possible unfelt injuries.
There are few cases of insensitivity to pain described in the literature, but there is no standard treatment [2]. Patients with CIPA can live a fairly normal life [4, 7, 10].
Congenital insensitivity to pain and anhidrosis (CIPA) is HSAN type IV. CIPA is a rare disease with an autosomal recessive inheritance. Recurrent episodes of fever, no sweating, insensitivity to pain, and self-injury are symptoms of CIPA. In addition, most patients suffering from CIPA experience mental ation [1].
