Summary: The Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906 (FMIA) was enacted to prevent adulterated or misbranded meat and meat products from being sold as food and to ensure that meat and meat products are slaughtered and processed under sanitary conditions.
FSIS protects public health by preventing illness from meat, poultry, and egg products. We do this by ensuring these products are safe, wholesome and properly labeled. FSIS is part of a national science-based system to ensure food safety and food defense.
Today the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA) requires all meat sold commercially in the U.S. be inspected to ensure its safe, wholesome, and properly labeled.
Retail-exempt wholesaling is limited to only 25% of the dollar value of the processors total sales or $75,700 for red meat and meat products and $56,600 for poultry products per calendar year, whichever is LESS (Federal Register 5.13. 2021). The dollar value limit is reevaluated annually by FSIS.
The Federal Meat Inspection Act of 1906 (P.L. 59-242) and the Wholesome Meat Act of 1967 (P.L. 90-201) were designed and implemented to provide the public with a safe, wholesome meat supply. Todays consumer relies on the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) inspectors to ensure this.
