Orton–Gillingham is a structured literacy approach. It introduced the idea of breaking reading and spelling down into smaller skills involving letters and sounds, and then building on these skills over time.
"Red Words" are what you might call sight words. These are common words that need to be memorized, because they often do not follow phonics rules, or follow advanced rules that are beyond the student's ability/knowledge at that grade level.
Why Do Students Need to Know These Red Words? Interestingly, out of the estimated 500 red words found in English, about 200 are found in grades K-2 text.
With multisensory instruction, kids use more than one sense at a time. Many reading programs for struggling readers use multisensory teaching methods. Multisensory instruction gives kids more than one way to make connections and learn concepts.
Red Words are irregular words that do not follow a particular pattern. Red Words can also be high-frequency words that students must learn before the specific concept has been taught. IMSE uses the term Red Word because the visual color red reminds students that these words are irregular.

Red words are words that do not follow a phonetic rule and need another way to be mastered. We are studying these words in numerical order in class and your child has learned how to arm tap them (see directions below). Your child will be tested on spelling and writing these words.
To help your child practise reading their words, first show them one word at a time, reading it to them and then asking them to repeat it back. Next, help them to identify the tricky sound in the word and help them practise spelling the words in a fun way (using paint/chalks/bubble writing/rainbow writing etc).
Red words are another way of saying 'tricky words'. This means that children may have difficulty pronouncing these words and they take some practice to get used to. These are some red words from phase 2-5 of phonics: I.
Orton-Gillingham red words are those words that cannot be sounded out phonetically and do not follow any particular phonemic rule. They are red because the students need to stop (like a stop sign) and think about them. They are also called “unfair” words because they just need to be memorized.
Red words are those words which contain spelling patterns that cannot be sounded out. Some of the most frequently used words in the English language have an uncommon spelling pattern and don't sound like they look, for example, said sounds like 'sed'. Red words have to be learnt by sight.
