In Northern Ireland, civil justice is administered mainly by the County Courts and the High Court. County Courts deal with cases of lesser value, substance, importance and complexity, while the High Court handles more substantial or complex cases.
The Crown Court deals with criminal defendants returned/committed for trial by Magistrates Courts. Cases for trial are heard before a judge and jury. Criminal appeals from the Magistrates Court go to the County Court. In Northern Ireland there are still non-jury trials (commonly known as Diplock courts).
The High Court can: Hear cases about claims for damages of over 75,000 (personal injury 60,000) Hear questions about the validity of a law. Hear appeals from the Circuit Court in civil matters. Review the decisions of all lower courts by judicial review.
