Heritage Documentation Programs (HDP) is a division of the U.S. National Park Service (NPS). It administers three programs established to document historic places in the United States: Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), and Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS).
The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) was established in 1933 to create a public archive of America‟s architectural heritage, consisting of measured drawings, historical reports, and large-format black white photographs.
The Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) was founded in 1969 to parallel HABS, providing for documentation of engineering works and industrial sites. In October 2000, the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) was permanently established to document historic landscapes.
An ideal HABS documentation project consists of three components: measured drawings, large-format photographs, and a written historical report. Each of these components plays a unique and integral role in the documentation project, and is intended to complement, rather than replicate, the others.
