The INSTI HIV-1/HIV-2 Antibody Test is a one-time use, rapid, visually read, flow-through immunoassay which detects antibodies to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Type 1 and Type 2 using a drop of human fingerstick blood. Other sample types which can be tested are venous whole blood, plasma and serum.
HIV 1/2 Antibody Test Kit (Colloidal Gold) is intended for qualitative detection of HIV 1/2 antibody in human serum or plasma, applying to auxiliary diagnosis of HIV infection.
The Western blot - the most commonly used confirmatory test - is a highly specific immunoblot that allows for the visualization of antibodies to the structural polypeptides of HIV. Some laboratories may use a radioimmunoprecipitation assay as their confirmatory assay or as part of their HIV testing algorithm.
Rapid blood tests show two lines if positive or one line if negative, in a similar way as a pregnancy test (see Figure 8). Results from laboratory tests are given as negative, positive or indeterminate. Negative or non-reactive means you are HIV negative.
Negative HIV-1 antibody but positive HIV-2 antibody results indicates the presence of HIV-2 infection. Together with a reactive initial HIV-1/-2 antigen and antibody screening test results, individuals with such results are presumed to have HIV-2 infection.
