While short-term capital gains from stocks or ETFs are taxed at your ordinary income tax rate, futures are taxed using the 60/40 rule: 60% are taxed at the long-term capital gains tax rate of 15%, while only 40% of your short-term capital gains are taxed at your ordinary income tax rate.
To apply for futures trading approval, your account must have: Margin approval (check your margin approval) An account minimum of $1,500 (required for margin accounts.) A minimum net liquidation value (NLV) of $25,000 to trade futures in an IRA.
You can start with as little as $100 USD if you start trading the micro futures. Which is where you should start. But that leaves no margin for error, pardon the pun. I would recommend trading micros, but funding your brokerage account with at least $1,000 USD.
The lot size is the minimum number of shares that we need to buy/sell if we wish to agree. The lot size for the TCS futures is 125, which means a minimum of 125 shares (or a multiple of 125 shares) have to be transacted while trading the TCS futures.
If your account value falls below $25,000, then any pattern day trading activities may constitute a violation. If you trade futures in a linked futures account, keep in mind that futures cash or positions do not count toward the $25,000 minimum account value.
