Basic Allowance for Housing, or BAH, provides uniformed service members equitable housing compensation based on housing costs in local civilian housing markets within the 50 U.S. states when government quarters are not provided. BAH is not intended to cover all of a service members housing costs.
Does the military pay for you to live off base?
BAH enables Service members to live off-base at a comparable rate as their civilian counterparts. It is not designed to cover all housing costs for all members. Some members may have out-of-pocket expenses because the rates are based on the median cost of rent.
Is it cheaper to live on base or off base?
Its usually cheaper in the long run. Rent and utilities are taken care of. The on post shopping usually has a slight discount comparee to off post. But the big savings is fuel. You wont be stuck in traffic waiting at the gate. You will be driving a fraction of the distance.
Do soldiers live on base for free?
As a new, single soldier, you will live in the barracks for free. If you get married or reach a certain rank, you can live in on post housing for free, or get an extra housing allowance in your check every month.
