Can I get a dislocation allowance before the move? You can request an advance of your DLA and some other moving payments, although this is not guaranteed. You'll need to visit your former installation's finance office 10 to 15 days before your move and file a request for your commander's approval.
DLA can be paid from the start of your claim. It cannot be backdated. Your claim will start on the date the form is received or the date you call the enquiry line (if you return the claim pack within 6 weeks). You'll usually get a decision letter about 8 weeks (40 working days) after your form is received.
To request a DLA advance, Soldiers need to fill out the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Form 9114. Or, they can receive the DLA after their move is completed when their fill out their Defense Department Form 1351-2 travel voucher. The Army is also pursuing efforts to ease other challenges during PCS moves.
Travel regulations authorize DLA payment before you move. You should receive your DLA about 30 days after you apply for it.
