The International Registration Plan (the Plan) is a registration reciprocity agreement among states of the United States and provinces of Canada providing for payment of license fees on the basis of total distance operated in all jurisdictions.
Should I Register Under IRP or IFTA? While IRP and IFTA may sound similar, they are in no way connected and are two separate entities. However, because of how similar they are, if you register for one, youll likely have to register for the other.
Today, the IRP includes the 48 contiguous US states, the District of Columbia, and ten Canadian provinces, collectively authorizing the registration of over 3.3 million commercial vehicles.
If you do not have a renewal notice or a current registration card, please call the Public Inquiry Division at 800-252-8980 (toll free in Illinois) or 217-785-3000 (outside Illinois) to obtain your Registration ID and PIN number.
The International Registration Plan (IRP) is an option for registering commercial vehicles that allows for interstate operation under a single registration plate and registration certificate (cab card) issued by your base state.

Tractors, trucks, and truck tractors (pulling units) registered with apportioned plates under the International Registration Plan (IRP) are exempt from motor vehicle tax when the vehicles are either purchased in Texas or are purchased out of state and registration fees are apportioned into Texas.
IFTA is a similar program to IRP, but it doesnt care about registration fees. Instead, IFTA (the International Fuel Tax Agreement) concerns the taxes truckers pay on the fuel they use. IFTA proportionally shares the taxes you pay when you buy fuel across all jurisdictions that you travel through.
