Form IT-201-X, also known as the New York State Tax Amendment, allows individuals who have already filed their original Form IT-201, the New York State Resident Income Tax Return, to make corrections or adjustments to their previously submitted information.
Complete a new or corrected return (Form 1040, Form 1040NR, etc.). Across the top of the new or corrected return, write Amended. Attach the new or corrected return to the back of Form 1040X. For more information, see Pub. 519, U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens.
You can download or print current or past-year PDFs of Form IT-201 directly from TaxFormFinder. You can print other New York tax forms here.
The State Tax Form 201, also known as IT-201, is the standard income tax return form for New York State residents. This form is used to report income, calculate tax liability, and claim credits or deductions. Think of it as the New York equivalent of the federal Form 1040.
Use Form IT-201-X if you correctly filed Form IT-203 (Nonresident and Part-Year Resident Income Tax Return) for 2024 but need to make changes. Use Form IT-203-X if you mistakenly filed Form IT-201 (Resident Income Tax Return) for 2024 when you were actually a nonresident or part-year resident.

If the correction results in a tax refund, wait to file the amended return until after youve received it. To complete a Form 1040-X, youll need a copy of the original tax return, W-2s, Schedules, Worksheets, corrected information and calculations, and any forms needed to support corrections.
Dont underestimate the benefits of filing an amended return, either. By making sure your tax return is accurate, you can maximize your refund or lower what you owe. Youll also reduce the risk of receiving a notice or IRS audit in the future.
