To receive Section 8 or public housing assistance in California, you must be a citizen of the United States or legal immigrant. Your income must be below 80% of the median income in your area. The majority of housing vouchers go to families earning less than 30% of their area's median income.
The Section 8 Housing Voucher Program assists in making safe and quality housing in the private rental market affordable to low, and very low-income households by reducing housing costs through direct rent subsidy payments to landlords.
Income information you need to provide: Social Security Verification Letter and Proof of Benefits. Proof of income (pay stubs, W2, tax returns) Bank statements. Documentation of public assistance benefits. Information on any assets you own.
The payments cover some or all of the voucher holder's rent. On average, each household will pay somewhere between 30% and 40% of its income on rent.
