The California Vehicle Code requires an oversize load permit for any load exceeding legal weight or dimensions. That would be loads exceeding 14 high (Section 35250), 86 wide (Section 35100), 40 long (single), 65 (truck/trailer), 75 (multi trailers) (Section 35400 35401), or 20,000 lbs/axle (Section 35550).
Dont do it. Youve probably heard this before, but it bears repeating here: if you cannot see the truck driver in their mirrors, theyre unable to see you. Oversize loads can be gargantuan. Give them lots of room (and time) to safely pass you.
The legal limits for a vehicles size and weight are 80,000 pounds, 53 long, 13 high and 8 wide. If your vehicle exceeds those numbers, its likely overweight or hauling an oversize load.
Typically, a load is considered over-dimensional when it surpasses 8.5 feet in width, 13.5 feet in height, is longer than 53 feet in length, and/or exceeds 80,000 pounds. Specifics can vary from state to state, but if considered OD, these loads will require special handling and permits due to their size.
To overload is to load an excessive amount in or on something, such as an overload of electricity which shorts out the circuits. Overloading causes a Too much! situation. To overload is to push something or someone too far. A supervisor can overload an employee by assigning too much work.

The general rule is that legal vehicle combinations exceeding a gross weight of 80,000 pounds must obtain a transportation permit and that the legal gross weight imposed on a single axle shall not exceed 20,000 pounds.
Examples of oversize/overweight loads include construction machines (cranes, front loaders, backhoes, etc.), pre-built homes, containers, and construction elements (bridge beams, generators, windmill propellers, rocket stages, and industrial equipment).
When a load exceeds the standard legal sizing or weight restrictions, it is classified as over-dimensional or oversized.
