If you examine your orthotics and find places that appear thin and worn down, you find any cracks in the material or pieces have broken off it's time to get them replaced. You notice uneven wear on your shoes. Orthotics are designed to correct biomechanical issues with your feet.
Your typical pair of custom foot orthotics will last for an average of two to three years. However, the lifetime of your orthotics will depend on their daily wear and tear.
A general rule of thumb is that you should consider replacing your orthotics every two to three years. That being said, we recommend that you come in for an orthotics check up on an annual basis, although you may want to come in earlier in certain situations.
If your pain is back, that's an obvious indication of your orthotics' inability to treat it any longer. You shouldn't feel any pain while standing or running with orthotics, and if there's formation of calluses and corns all over the sole, that's how you know the orthotics are worn out.
Age \u2013 Most orthotics will last one to five years. If your custom orthotics were made from hard plastic, you usually only need a replacement every three to five years. If, however, they are made from soft plastic or foam, they may need replacement every year.

We recommend you break them in slowly by wearing them as instructed on the first page and increasing the wear time in small amounts until you can wear them all day long. Most patients wear the orthotics full time in three to five days. The slower you start the easier the break-in period will be.
Our podiatrists recommend having your orthotics evaluated yearly, to check on wear, and replaced every 3 years. For pediatric orthotics, patients should follow up every 6 months, to monitor their development, and have their orthotics replaced after they grow 2 shoe sizes.
Orthotics are like eyeglasses and meant to be worn indefinitely. Eyeglasses change the shape of light to allow one to see better. Orthotics change the way ground reactive forces hit the feet, to allow one to walk better. They work to support certain muscles and ligaments, so that there is not excess strain on them.
Unfortunately, it isn't always so easy to determine that point. While a typical custom orthotic might last around 2-3 years on average, not every case is a typical one. Some people need theirs replaced every year, while others can get 5 years or more (occasionally much more) of use out of theirs.
If you have been wearing orthotics for a substantial amount of time, it may take 3-6 months to eliminate wearing them completely. This is because the body becomes reliant on them and muscles can weaken over time as they do not need to work to control abnormal foot mechanics.
