Anton Chekhov's short story 'The Student' may appear as a story that espouses the religious beliefs of its author. Instead, it is a story about a young man, a seminary student, who discovers how the past continues to affect the present. This recognition gives him a sense of hope and feeling of joy.
Why is Anton Chekhov so influential? Chekhov captured life in the Russia of his time by using a deceptively simple technique devoid of obtrusive literary devices. He is regarded as the outstanding representative of late 19th-century Russian realism.
His parents influenced his writing in varied ways: his father was physically abusive and some historians believe Chekhov used him as the model for his portraits of hypocrisy; his mother was an excellent storyteller who entertained her children with tales of her travels with her cloth-merchant father all over Russia.
Chekhov further explores the theme of connection when Ivan visits Vasilisa's home. By retelling the story of Peter's betrayal of Jesus there is a sense that both Ivan and Vasilisa are connecting with one another. They have a bond or a togetherness based on their religious beliefs.
Born January 29, 1860, Chekhov would become one of the most popular writers in modern history, often credited with the creation of the short story. Chekhov began writing as a teenager, first for money to help pay for school and support his family, then as a way to reform the art itself.
