The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) was developed from a project funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers [1]. The aim was to develop and test a standardized questionnaire methodology allowing comparison of low back, neck, shoulder and general complaints for use in epidemiological studies.
From the high sensitivity and specificity values the NMQ questionnaire was declared valid. Research by Takekawa et al. (2015) revealed that research subjects identified with low back pain complaints using NMQ obtained a sensitivity value of 100% and a specificity of 88%.
A questionnaire can be reliable but invalid, but a valid questionnaire is always reliable. Validity is the degree to which a questionnaire evaluates what it is intended to evaluate.
Respondents are asked if they have had any musculoskeletal trouble in the last 12 months and last 7 days which has prevented normal activity. Section 2: additional questions relating to the neck, the shoulders and the lower back further detail relevant issues.
The PSEQ was suitable for chronic pain patients in general. The psychometric properties of the PSEQ demonstrated reliability, validity, and internal consistency with a Cronbach Alpha score of 0.92.
