In July 2020, Virginia enacted its first comprehensive whistleblower protection law. Entitled the \u201cVirginia Whistleblower Protection Law,\u201d the law is a huge step for employees and provides protections consistent with other whistleblower statutes across the country.
What is whistleblowing? Whistleblowing is the term used when a worker passes on information concerning wrongdoing. In this guidance, we call that \u201cmaking a disclosure\u201d or \u201cblowing the whistle\u201d. The wrongdoing will typically (although not necessarily) be something they have witnessed at work.

To qualify as a protected whistleblower, a Federal employee or applicant for employment must disclose: a violation of any law, rule, or regulation; gross mismanagement; a gross waste of funds; an abuse of authority; or a substantial and specific danger to public health or safety.
The Act does not require you to have evidence before blowing the whistle. However you must reasonably believe that the disclosure you are making is in in the public interest and is substantially true. Any evidence you do have is likely to be helpful in considering whether further steps should be taken.
