To test stimulability, an SLP uses repetition tasks where he/she says the sound correctly and asks the child to repeat the sound. This assessment may include several attempts by the child as he/she tries to correctly say the sound.
The Stimulability Approach from Dr. Adele Miccio is another (short-term) option for addressing articulation in very young children (24 years old) who have extremely small phonetic inventories and are not yet stimulable for most consonant sounds.
Stimulability is the childs ability to accurately imitate a misarticulated sound when the clinician provides a model.
Below are some general guidelines for testing stimulability. Find a quiet place with minimal distractions to enhance the childs ability to focus. Identify the targeted error sounds. Present each sound in isolation, syllables, and/or words with clear articulation. Record the childs correct/incorrect sound productions.
Home Practice for Students Who Arent Stimulable for a Speech Go over speech anatomy using a mirror and visuals. Work on auditory discrimination. Give exaggerated models during play. Watch instructional videos together (ahem, Peachie Spechie videos!) to better understand articulator placement for the target sound.
