Blood sugar may directly influence blood pressure, too. High blood sugar can worsen and potentiate high blood pressure through several means, says Ian Neeland, M.D., an associate professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH.
There are several other factors that also increase BP, one of which is added sugars. The current high intake of added sugars increases obesity which, in turn, raises BP. Recent studies also suggest that added sugars, particularly those in soft drinks, may have a direct effect on BP.
In addition, chronic high blood sugar leads to long-term high insulin levels that can increase blood pressure via a variety of mechanisms, explains Dr. Neeland. These include activating the sympathetic nervous system as well as causing the kidneys to decrease their reabsorption of water and sodium.
Reduced intake of sugars was also significantly associated with reduced BP. No association was found for diet beverage consumption or caffeine intake and BP. These findings suggest that sugars may be the nutrients that contribute to the observed association between SSB and BP.
