When a vessel is grounded intentionally she is said to be beached. If she is grounded accidentally she is stranded. A vessel is usually beached when she is damaged to such an extent that the pumps are unable to cope with the rate of flooding.
Sick, distressed or dying whales, or mothers having difficulty giving birth may come into shallow water and strand. This is especially the case for single whales or mother/calf pairs. For mass strandings, strong social bonds may lead to a herd following a sick or disorientated pod member into trouble.
While it is possible for a whale to survive stranding, its unfortunately not typical due to overheating and their sheer body weight, which causes their organs to collapse on land. Of course, this is dependent on how long the rescue takes and if the animal is healthy enough to release back into the ocean.
Every year thousands of whales, dolphins, and other marine animals wash up on beaches around the world. This phenomenoncalled beaching or strandingoccurs among both healthy individuals as well as injured (or dead) animals that are driven ashore by prevailing winds.
However, mass strandings arent only caused by whales getting lost or misjudging the depth of the water. One or more individuals may be diseased and, as they become weaker, they seek shallower waters so they can more easily come to the surface to breathe.

Stranding or mortality events involving larger numbers of animals typically are less frequent. One of the most well-known examples is mass stranding of cold-stunned turtles during winter months.
Strandings of multiple animals (sea turtles or marine mammals, excluding cetacean cow/calf pairs) simultaneously within a defined area often are referred to as mass strandings or mass mortality events. When elevated stranding rates occur over a longer time period, the Marine Mammal Protection Act sets out a process
Ship grounding or ship stranding is the impact of a ship on seabed or waterway side. It may be intentional, as in beaching to land crew or cargo, and careening, for maintenance or repair, or unintentional, as in a marine accident. In accidental cases, it is commonly referred to as running aground.
