FREQUENT INSPECTION The entire sling shall be thoroughly examined and removed from service if damage is detected. OSHA and ASME stipulate that, before each day or shift, the sling and all fastenings and attachments shall be inspected for damage and defects by a competent person designated by the employer.
How often are sling inspections required by OSHA?
Such inspections shall in no event be at intervals greater than once every 12 months. The employer shall make and maintain a record of the most recent month in which each alloy steel chain sling was thoroughly inspected, and shall make such record available for examination.
How do you inspect a wire sling?
Visual inspection: This is the most basic type of inspection and involves looking for any obvious signs of damage, such as broken wires, kinks, or corrosion. Functional test: This test involves loading the sling to its rated capacity and observing it for any signs of failure.
How often do slings need to be inspected?
Certain types of lifting equipment, such as slings made from synthetic fibres and wire rope slings with soft eyes, tend to suffer from quicker wear and tear, thus requiring more frequent inspection. Slings shall be inspected by a competent person at intervals of service of not more than 3 months.
Should slings be tested and tagged in every month?
Inspection frequency is based on how often the sling is used, the types of lifts being performed, the conditions in which the sling is being used, and past experience with service life of similar slings and usage. If the sling is used in more severe conditions, then the inspection should be performed every 3 months.
