You need at least 1,000 hours, around six months, of on-the-job training within a 12-month span to receive the highest certification for ophthalmic assistants. If you receive on-the-job training first and then study independently, you must complete 2,000 hours of supervised training and earn 12 JCAHPO Group A credits.
Certification is valid for 36 months and recertification is accomplished by passing an online examination.
Trainee experience. The Ophthalmic Assistant Training Program is an eight-month program designed to give students a combination of lecture, lab, and clinical learning. The first two months focus on classroom and lab education, with the remaining six months designated for clinical rotations.
