Your 940 tax form is due at the end of January following the year in which wages were paid. For 2019, the Form 940 due date is January 31, 2020. The filing of this form is done annually even though tax payments may have to be made quarterly.
Am I Required to File It? Form 940 is a tax form that allows employers to report their annual FUTA (Federal Unemployment Tax Act) tax. Most employers that have employees need to file this form (or have a payroll provider file it for them).
Each year, every business with employees must file Form 940 to compute the amount of unemployment tax that must be paid on the federal level. This payroll tax is based on the first $7,000 of wages of each employee (including owners of S corporations who receive a salary for work performed for their businesses).
Form 940 covers a standard calendar year, and the form and payment are due annually by January 31 for the prior year. There may be earlier payment deadlines, however. If your FUTA tax liability exceeds $500 for the calendar year, you have to make at least one quarterly payment.
Use Form 940 to report your annual Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) tax. Together with state unemployment tax systems, the FUTA tax provides funds for paying unemployment compensation to workers who have lost their jobs.
