In Olympic gymnastics, the score for an athlete is based on two different components; the Execution Score and Difficulty Score. Each Execution Score starts at 10.0 points. The judges on the execution panel deduct points for errors, such as steps on landings, falls, flexed feet, bent knees, etc.
Solid scores start at about the mid-13 range. Scores in the 14s are very good and scores in the 15s are excellent. Anything lower than around 12.500 is considered a miss.
Gymnasts are awarded a D score for difficulty and an E score for execution. The difficulty score is based on the performed moves, earning between 0.1 and 1.0 points per move. The top eight moves are counted for women, and top 10 for men, to give them their final D score.
The D-score (or difficulty score) indicates the difficulty of the exercise on three criteria: Difficulty Value (DV): The difficulty value of a routine is the combined total of the eight elements with the highest value according to the Table of Elements. The dismount is included as one of the eight elements.
There are two judging panels in artistic gymnastics. One looks at difficulty (the D-Score panel) and one looks at execution (the E-Score panel). The final D-Score and the final E-Score are then added together to give the total score for the routine.
