With its 31 covered bridges, Parke County is the No. 1 county with the most covered bridges, in the United States, and is famous for its Covered Bridge Festival, which runs for 10 days every October.
Because the bridges were constructed with timber, they were covered to protect them from the elements. They were often the largest covered area in a community and were sometimes used for revival meetings, weddings, and political rallies.
U.S. Nineteen covered bridges were built in Iowa between 1855 and 1885; nine remain, five of which are in Madison County around Winterset. U.S. As many as 700 covered bridges existed in the past, though only 12 are known to still exist.
