Your benefits are determined by your membership classification and member tier. Most current UC Retirement Plan (UCRP) members are in the 1976 Tier and are eligible to receive a pension at age 50 with five years of UCRP service credit.
A contingent annuitant is a person you name, through an alternate payment option, to receive lifetime monthly income upon your death. If you elect a contingent annuitant option, your income will be reduced depending on your age and the age of the contingent annuitant at retirement, as well as the option you select.
If you are in the 1976 Tier and your UC employment is covered by Social Security, your basic retirement income is reduced slightly to account for the Social Security taxes that UC has paid on your behalf. If you retire before age 65, UCRP provides a monthly temporary supplement that restores the full benefit amount.
For example, a pension plan may offer a contingent annuity that pays out only if the retiree lives to a certain age. If the retiree dies before reaching that age, the payments would stop. Similarly, a life insurance policy may offer a contingent annuity that pays out only if the insured person dies.
FAQ: Retirement MERS Member The contingent beneficiary is the person or persons selected to receive the benefit if the primary beneficiary is not alive at the time of your death.

HAPC stands for Highest Average Plan Compensation and is used in your UCRP (Pension Choice) retirement benefit calculation. Your HAPC is your average monthly full-time equivalent compensation, including any stipends, during the 36 continuous months preceding retirement in which compensation was the highest.
The person or persons whom you designate to receive that continued benefit is known as your contingent annuitant or your optionee. You might choose, for example, to have your contingent annuitant receive a lifetime benefit after your death that is equal to 50% of the amount of your benefit.
UCRP formula: (Age factor x UCRP Years of Service Credit) x HAPC = Basic Retirement Income (BRI), a monthly lifetime benefit.
