COBOL coding rules The first six character positions are allocated for sequence numbers. The seventh character position is reserved for the continuation character, or for an asterisk which denotes a comment line. The actual real program text starts with column 8.
These columns are also called Area-A. In these columns, entries can be started from columns 8, 9, 10 or 11. Entries of this column are called Margin-A entries. All COBOL divisions, paragraphs, sections, and some special entries must begin in Area A.
There was a need for a coding sheet to identify the program coding by the punch card reader. The COBOL coding sheet was a structure to identify from where the COBOL coding statements punched/started writing to differentiate the statements from others.
Area A is the group of columns in which you start a DIVISION, PARAGRAPH and SECTION. We'll talk more about these below in the next section, The COBOL Structural Hierarchy. Columns 12-72, also known as Area B, is where you write code statements. Columns 73-80 is reserved for developer use.
