Tembo SACCO provides for open membership for anyone who meet the following Requirements: Must be a person of 18 years and above, either employed or self-employed carrying out a legal activity in Kenya. Must duly complete the membership application form and the nominee Form. Must have a copy of the national ID.
SACCOs have until now been sharing names of own loan defaulters with credit reference bureaus (CRBs), but they have not had access to the records of bad borrowers since the law allowed only banks to view the information.
At a minimum, SACCOs offer savings accounts and loans. Deposit-based loans are usually sized at three to four times the amount of the member's savings held at the SACCO. What makes the model unique is that loans are secured by the members' deposits, and oftentimes by guarantees from other members too.
